Shropshire Young Ramblers was formed in 2005 and a part of the Ramblers. The group supports the charity by requiring members to join the charity, and the charity supports the group and walkers in return. It's run by a committee of volunteers (names below) who work together with our members to keep the group active with walks and socials to look forward to.
We currently have members ranging from their early 20’s right through to about 50. For those over 50, you’re very welcome with us but you can find another Ramblers group may better cater for you.
Guide dogs are permitted on walks, however we kindly ask that you check with the walk leader beforehand as some routes may have challenging terrain that is unsuitable for dogs. For other dogs, it is down to walk leader discretion as to whether they are allowed, depending on the type of walk and location. The walk details page will indicate if dogs are welcome.
Anyone under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult/parent/guardian on all walks due to insurance reasons. Anyone looking to bring a small child or baby with them must also seek permission from the walk leader prior to the event, as the walk may be unsuitable due to length, grading or other reasons. The walk leader has the right to turn people away who do not follow these guidelines.
All our walk leaders are volunteers and members of SYR, and are fully insured by Ramblers. Members are encouraged to organise and lead walks, and help will be offered to those who wish to have a go for themselves.
Yes, we have WhatsApp groups for organising car shares, your walk leader can help you join them. This helps is with limited parking and reduces our carbon footprint. If you do car share we encourage you to offer the driver some form of contribution, paying for parking, a drink if we finish at a pub/tea shop or a donation towards fuel.
There's no charge to attend individual walks and you're welcome to attend up to three walks without commitment. After the third walk we ask you to join Ramblers (more information below) if you wish to continue attending walks. The charity does a lot of good work for walkers and funds our insurance.
Not at all! But if you're not an experienced walker, it might be worth attending to check your fitness and gear. We find that holding specific walks helps new people come without feeling “new” on their own. If you're not sure, speak to a walk leader.
We recommend the following items of clothing:
If in doubt, please check with the walk leader. It is possible that you will not be allowed to participate in a walk of your equipment/clothing is unsuitable.
Joining us is as simple as attending walks! If you're enjoying doing that then you must also become a member of Ramblers, affiliating yourself to our group (code SS50). For more details please visit the Ramblers web site.
There are two main ways to keep up to date with events:
We do not currently post our walks on Facebook.
If so then follow this link to our contact form on the Ramblers site.
